Overview of the Directorate

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute, EPHI introduced the Knowledge Translation (KT) platform during Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) in 2009. The aim was to translate knowledge from research findings into policy, practice, and product or technology.

Over the past years, the KT platform named “Technology Transfer and Research Translation Directorate (TTRTD)” has been engaged in preparing policy briefs and conducting policy dialogues, systematic reviews, Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and dissemination of synthesized evidences.

Recently, the TTRTD is renamed to “Knowledge Translation (KT) Directorate” by which it can easily promote its activities with local and international partners. For the last one year the KT Directorate is reorganizing its activities to help decision-makers reduce the 'know-do' gap by applying research and evidence to policy and practice. As a result, knowledge translation taskforce has been established with the objective of re-invigorating the KT directorate at EPHI by initiating a strategic plan development and forming a functional system that links knowledge synthesis into knowledge-based practice.

Many terms have been used to describe the process of putting knowledge into action. For EPHI, Knowledge translation (KT) is defined as the synthesis, exchange, dissemination and ethically sound application of knowledge –among researchers and users – to improve the health of populations, provide more effective health services and products, and strengthen the health care system.
