Dr. Melkamu Abte (MD,MPH)

Dr. Melkamu Abte Afele, is currently the Deputy Director General at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, leading the Public Health Emergency Management Wing, since Tikimt 2015 EC/October 2023 GC. He brings to this role a wealth of experience, having previously served as the Head of the Regional Health Bureau of the Amhara Region. Dr Melkamu also has an extensive academic and clinical leadership career having served as Chief Clinical Officer of Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, as  Assistant Professor and Head of the School of Medicine at Wollo University, as well as a practicing Clinician in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and Boru Meda General Hospital.

He received his first degree as a Doctor of Medicine, and then went on to  specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the University of Gondar. He holds a Master’s in Public Health from Wollo University, as well as a second Master’s in Sexual & Reproductive Health Policy and Programming, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

His career trajectory is a testament to his dedication and commitment to developing the capacities and capabilities of the overall national health system particularly focusing on emergency preparedness and response to ensure the health security of the Ethiopian Public.
