International Training course on planning and managing malaria control program is on progress

An International Training Course of Planning and Managing Malaria Control Program, that is organized by the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO/AFRO) in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute is on progress since 2nd of September 2013, at Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute Conference Hall.

The training program, that will be ended on 11 of October, 2013, has the main objective of updating and equipping of National Malaria Control program managers and their team members, Government and non-Government partners in order to effectively scale-up malaria control activities in their respective Countries/Regions. The training is also expected to maintain and improve collaboration among participating countries and different malaria experts and individual participants.

 

Dr. Amha Kebede Director General of the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute, on his opening remarks welcomed all the participants of the training program.

 

Dr. Amha also said that, the new mandate and direction of our Institute provides emphasis for the training programs in order to strengthen the capacity of the manpower of the Institute’s so as to improve the quality of the health researches that we are conducting. That is why today, significant number of staff members of our Institute is participating in this training course and I hope they would acquire substantial knowledge and skills from the program.

On his behalf, Dr. Paul Mainuka, WHO country representative said that many countries in Africa are facing challenges in addressing of the burden of malaria. In this regard, this training program will help WHO/AFRO countries to address the issues of their inadequate human resources and strengthen the health system capacity in order to scaling-up effective malaria control interventions.

 

Dr. Paul also requested the course participants to apply the knowledge and experience they acquired when they get back to their home.

 

The course, among others focuses on Epidemiology of malaria, Entomology and vector control, program management, planning implementation, monitoring and evaluation of malaria control activities.

 

The training program, that will have two field brief visits to Oromia region, attracts 34 participants from 11 AFRO Anglophone countries.
