“Media Professionals Urged to Combat Misinformation with Credible Sources”

The media have been urged to play a critical role in shaping public understanding and action by reporting fact-based information gathered from credible sources. To enhance accurate reporting and public communication on Mpox, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Communication and Public Relation Executive organized a specialized training session for media, communication, and public relations professionals at Adama town from June 9-11/2025. This initiative aims to equip journalists and PR experts with essential knowledge to disseminate reliable information and combat misinformation about the disease.
The training encompassed critical topics such as the transmission, symptoms, and prevention of Mpox; Ethiopia’s current Mpox situation and response efforts; the role of media and communication professionals in risk communication and public awareness; and responsible health reporting during public health emergencies.
The training emphasized the importance of collaboration between health authorities and the media to ensure the public receives fact-based, timely updates on MPox. As misinformation can fuel unnecessary panic or complacency, the media are urged to play a critical role in shaping public understanding and action by reporting facts and information gathered from credible sources.
Participants praised the session, noting its relevance amid global health concerns. The journalist remarked that the training clarifies how to report on MPox without causing fear while promoting preventive measures.
EPHI reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening health communication and urged media professionals to utilize official sources for updates. Similar workshops are planned for other regions to ensure nationwide consistency in MPox messaging.
