Meeting on Malaria Sentinel Surveillance Sites Conducted

A consultative meeting on malaria sentinel surveillance sites which was organized by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Bacterial, Parasitic and Zoonotic Disease Research Directorate (PZDRD) was held from September 5-7, 2017 at Bishoftu town.
The aim of the meeting was to share the findings of the survey which EPHI conducted on selected 25 malaria sentinel surveillance sites to assess their institutional capacity and also to develop working manual as preliminary steps of establishing the sentinel surveillance sites.
On the meeting oral presentation, open discussion and group work was employed to achieve the objectives of the meeting. The roles and responsibilities of key players of malaria surveillance such as Regional Health Bureaus, Academic Institutions, EPHI, Federal Ministry of Health and Malaria Partners were discussed upon.
Dr. Adugna Weyessa from PZDRD who is coordinator of the meeting said that on this meeting a guideline on management and working relationship among key players will be developed and the guideline for Malaria Sentinel Surveillance site of Ethiopia will be finalized and will be submitted to EPHI.
“At the end of this meeting the participants will have a beeter understanding how the selected malaria sentinel surveillance sites will function and working relationship of key players. Generally, participants will build consensus on malaria surveillance and ground base on establishing 25 functional sentinel sites,” added Dr. Adugna.
Very important comments, suggestions and inputs were forwarded from the participants which were all accommodated accordingly during finalizing the guideline.
Focal persons from eight regional states and on City Administration, National Malaria Control Program /Ministry of Health/, senior researchers from academic institutes, malaria partners and researchers from EPHI participated on the meeting.
