Nationwide Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care Assessment Survey is Launched

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) officially launched the Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care Assessment (EmONC) survey on May 3, 2016 on a program held to dispatch data collectors to the field work.
The EmONC assessment aims to generate evidence on the current availability, utilization, and quality of EmONC services in Ethiopia to support strengthening of national EmONC program and assess key determinants of EmONC services and feed to the plan of action for the implementation of EmONC service facilities.
Abebe Bekele EPHI’s Health System Research Directorate Director indicated that in this round of the survey more than 100 data collectors have been on practical and theoretical training for the last two weeks in Awassa town for the successful implementation of their work.
Dr. Amha Kebede EPHI’s Director General on his behalf explained the objective of the survey as it has a great deal of value to the quality and equity of the service in the country. The Federal Ministry of Health has been mobilizing about 50 million Birr for field work operation and other related logistic items in kind secured from different partners. Technical support has been provided from Averting Maternal Death and Disability (Colombia University) and other developing partners and professional associations working on maternal and newborn health in the country.
