Nutritionists of the Institute Receives Trainings

Nutritionists and Food Scientists of the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute take delivery of five days training from June 15 to 22, 2012 given by Rosalind S. Gibson, PhD, a Research Professor at University of OTAGO, New Zealand.
Prof. Rosalind S. Gibson, who is also one of the Authors of the Ethiopian Food Composition Table that was published in 1965 by the Ethiopian Nutrition Institute, provided training on how to update the food composition table for Ethiopia, how to improve supplementary feeding, causes of Zinc deficiency and how to improve Zinc deficiency.
During her five days training program, Prof. Rosalind has also provided suggestions on the ongoing Ethiopian National Food Consumption Survey.
According to Aregash Samuel, A/Director of Food Science and Nutrition Research Directorate at the Institute, the research team of the National Food Consumption Survey has deployed Prof. Rosalind’s research methodology for the ongoing survey.
On her stay in Ethiopia, Professor Rosalind S. Gibson who is the author of the book, Principles of Nutritional Assessment, has also provided training and an advisee role for Applied Nutrition Masters program students of in Hawassa University, South Nations and Nationalities and Peoples Region of Ethiopia.
Professor Rosalind S. Gibson was asked about her impression on the emphasis given to the nutrition. She responded that, nutrition doesn’t receive enough attention worldwide and in Ethiopia. “It is more important issue for countries like Ethiopia than other economically developed countries and it has to be given enough attention and integrated in the health and the agriculture sectors” she added.
Comparing the health service delivery in previous regimes and the recent time, Professor Rosalind S. Gibson said that, there are several improvements this time in the health service delivery. She has cited as an instance that the implementation of the health extension program and its integration of nutrition as one of the components of the program.
