ToT on Guinea Worm Disease Eradication was Delivered

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, The Carter Center and World Health Organization delivered Training for Trainers (ToT) to PHEM focal persons working on the Guinea Worm Eradication Program in Bishuftu town from January 14 – 16, 2019.
The objective of the training was to accelerate tour Guinea worm diseases eradication efforts through active engagement of PHEM officers across the nation.
On the training comprehensive PHEM and detail presentations on Guinea Worm disease eradication campaign were presented. And the PHEM National Plan of Action for 2019 was also presented to the participants; and based on this, participants developed their provisional action plans to be cascaded across their Regions.
Mesfin Wossen coordinator of the Guinea Worm Eradication Program (EDEP) in his opening speech said that the program has been active since 1992 and according to the study conducted 1130 people were infected by the disease, however it is decreasing year by year and there is no case reported in the just ended year. So in order to increase the awareness of the health workers and the community this training is organized.
“The training will show the trainees how to handle rumors, information exchange and concentrate on surveillance,” added Mesfin.
According to Getaneh Abriha, PHEM Officer at EPHI even if there is no human case reported in the year 2018, the disease has occurred on animals.
The EDEP was established in 1992.A case search was conducted throughout the country in 1993 to identify endemic areas .The survey indicated that;
• Six woredas of Gambella Region
• And one Woreda of South Omo Zone were also endemic for Dracunculiasis, then
• In 1994, program implementation initiated in Gambella and South Omo Zone
• Since then the campaign was launched and yielded remarkable achievements.
