Training for Upcoming Malaria Elimination Survey Conducted

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Bacterial, Parasitic and Zoonotic Diseases Research Directorate provided training for survey teams for Malaria Elimination Baseline assessment in Bisheftu town from June 12 to 16, 2017.
The trainees will participate on the survey of Malaria Baseline Assessment in Elimination –planned Districts of Ethiopia to be undertaken from June 17 to August 6, 2017. The survey will be conducted by EPHI, the Federal Ministry of Health (MoH) and partner organizations in 239 woredas selected from six regions.
To assess the profile of districts in terms of number of villages (kebeles) with malaria, hospitals, health centers and health posts in malarious kebeles; human resource capacity in the districts, governance and political support in regards to, financial and technical support for malaria elimination program and to access malaria case management in the districts in terms of laboratory and antimalarial treatment activities are some of the specific aims of the survey.
According to MoH’s report of 2013/2014, malaria was among the top ten leadin causes of outpatient visits, accounting for 5.3% of all outpatient visits and 2.4% of health facility admissions among all age groups. In the same year, the total number of laboratory confirmed and clinical malaria cases were 2,627,182. Of the total malaria cases, 84.1% was confirmed by microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests; where 64.0% were P. Falciparum and 36.0% were P.vivax cases.
