Training held on Guinea Worm Disease
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) in collaboration with The Federal Ministry of Health, WHO and The Carter Center-Ethiopia conducted a training of trainers on National Guinea Worm Eradication Program (NGWEP) for regional Guinea worm focal personnel’s from June 2 to 3, 2016 in Bishoftu town.
The objective of the training was to update the current situation of guinea worm disease in the country and to create awareness among the regions and to develop a common plan of action on national guinea worm disease eradication program.
Dr. Zerhune Tadesse the Carter Center- Ethiopia Country Director in his opening remarks said that, this national guinea worm disease eradication program implementation was started in 2013. Since then a lot of efforts has been done but the planned target is not yet achieved. To eradicate guinea worm disease from our Country it needs the commitment of political leaders, administrators and Health professionals at all levels, he added.
According to the national guinea worm eradication program coordinator Mr. Amenu Shiferaw, to achieve the goals of eradication program we have planned to train four health professionals from each region and City Administrations. From each regional health bureaus one public health emergency management head, one STI focal person, one guinea worm focal person and one health professional from related department have been trained, he added.
The training attracted 52 participants from Federal Ministry of Health, WHO, The Cater center, nine regional Health bureaus, two City Administrations, EPHI and four different medias.
