Validation Workshop for Traditional Medicine Policy was Carried Out
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Traditional and Modern Medicine Research Directorate (TMMRD) and EFMHACA organized a validation workshop for policy, strategy and proclamation on traditional medicines on December 19, 2018.
The workshop aimed to validate the policy, strategy and proclamation document and send it to the Federal Ministry of Health’s policy makers. The document was prepared by TMMRD in collaboration with EFMHACA.
Dr. Ebba Abate, Director General of EPHI while opening the workshop indicated that documents show that Traditional Medicine is more than 5000 years old and in Africa more than 80% of the people use Traditional Medicine.
“Currently Traditional Medicine is one of sectors that have been given the due attention. EPHI’s TMMRD has been active for the last 20 years. TMMRD has more than 10 traditional medicines that have went through laboratory test and are ready for field assessment test
FMHACA’s Deputy Director General Kewodin Redi, on his part said that in Ethiopia knowledge of traditional medicine is transferred from generation to generation only by the word of mouth.
“Knowledge about the medicine should be properly recorded and documented. Preparing traditional medicine proclamation, creating educational system, patent right, integrating activities that are done in different offices, coordinating and supporting are some of the major activities that we need to do to develop the sector,” said the Deputy Director General.
On the workshop Roadmap on Traditional Medicine, Draft Ethiopian Traditional Medicine Policy and Strategy and other related presentations were presented.
