EPHI Compiled the IHR Report

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) along with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other ministries and authorities compiled the 2018 International Health Regulation (IHR) report.
The report was compiled on the IHR National Self-Assessment and Evaluation Workshop held in Bishoftu from November 16 – 18, 2018. The report was compiled using the State Party Self-Assessment Annual Reporting Tool (SPAR).
“It is a signed agreement and we have to assess ourselves and find out the gaps. States Parties should have an adequate legal framework in all relevant sectors to support and facilitate the effective and efficient implementation of all of their obligations and rights under the IHR. Even where new or revised legislation may not be required under a State Party’s legal system, States Parties may still choose to revise some legislation, regulations or other instruments to facilitate their implementation and maintenance in more efficient, effective or beneficial manner. And on behalf of the Ministry of Health I would like to thank you all for participating on this workshop” said Aschalew Abayneh from Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) in his opening speech.
Dr. Abiy Girmay from WHO while explaining the SPAR indicated that this year’s report is different because previously the report was done by WHO alone but now different sectors that have relation with the health sector are involved.
Also, on the workshop, EPHI’s Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) acting Director Dr. Feyissa Regassa explained SPAR’s background and objectives.
States Parties are the 194 WHO member states currently identified by IHR and any States which may hereafter accede to the IHR in accordance with the terms of the regulations and the WHO constitution.
