EPHI Confirms further Commitments to Strengthen AMR Surveillance and Research Implementations
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Director General, Dr. Mesay Hailu reaffirms that Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) as a major global health threat including in Ethiopia while the launching of a project on antimicrobial resistance to strengthen, through the implementation of the “One Health” approach, the capacities of Ethiopia to prevent and respond to the growing scourge of antimicrobial resistance with French Embassy in Ethiopia on June 3, 2024.
He further mentioned that the AMR surveillance and research implementation by EPHI is expanded in scope and scale of sentinel sites that participate in the surveillance system across the country guided by the Ministry of Health and EPHI surveillance and research implementation strategies in collaboration with key One Health AMR national actors and international partners such as WHO, ACDC, World bank, US-CDC, US-IDDS, Global One Health I (GOHI) initiative, Association of Public Health Laboratories and recently, Pandemic fund and health Emergency fund (World Bank). The Director General finally thanked the French Embassy for this collaboration and expressed EPHI’s leadership commitment to implement this initiative as per the standards of implementation modalities.
The French ambassador, Mr. Remi Marechaux also expressed that AMR is a global issue and prevention and containment strategies are also complex and need collaborative effort at national regional, and international levels. He added that the Embassy is happy to work and continue collaborating with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute to tackle AMR in a coordinated effort through one health perspective, including the human, animal, and environment sectors. This project brings together four East African countries (Ethiopia, Uganda Kenya, and Tanzania ) to exchange knowledge, and skills and promote best practices to tackle AMR.
