The 2nd Cohort of AVoHC SURGE Trainees Certified
The 92 trainees who completed the 2nd Cohort of the Ethiopian National AVoHC SURGE training of multi deciplinary experts have received their recognition certificate on December 8,2023. The training was given for the last 33 days.
Dr. Mesay Hailu, Director General of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) while addressing the trainees expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the organizers and then explained EPHI’s Public Health Emergency Management’s recently implemented reform aimed to improve the responses to public health emergencies accordingly.
“Ethiopia has been responding effectively to Public Health Emergencies. The emergency surveillance, prepardness, response and recovery endeavors need experts like you who are trained in such programs. Thus you are expected to contribute towards ensuring the health protection of our people. EPHI, as always, is there for you to support you in your future engagements,” said Dr. Mesay.
Deputy Director General of EPHI Dr. Melkamu Abte in his welcome speech extended his heartfelt congratulations and welcomed the guests.
“You have got the opportunity to enhance your skills and knowledge in emergency responses, and we are proud to witness your achievements,” added Dr. Melkamu.
The Federal Police Health Directorate Director Commander Dr. Abrham Tefera on his part reminded that agreements with EPHI have been signed to work collaboratively and conducting such kind of capacity building program is part of the agreement.
According to Dr. Patrick Abok, World Health Organization’s (WHO) Emergency Prepardness and Response Cluster Team Lead more than 60% of the previous graduates of this training have been deployed to various response activities.
“The government leads WHO supports,” added Dr. Patrick.
Also Mrs. Neima Zenu, EPHI’s Emergency Prepardness and capacity Building Directorate Director and EPR- Flagship Intiative focal person explained that Ethiopia is a member of the Global Outbreak Response so the certified experts can register online to join this program.
The general plan of this program is to provide training for 3000 experts from 17 African countries. From these countries 14 of them have already started implementing the training and Ethiopia is leading by certifying 190 experts, explained Mr. Aschalew Abayneh who is Emergency Management Support Pillar Head of the training program.
The trainees were drawn from Amhara, Tigray, Somali Regions, and also from Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, EPHI, Ethiopian Pharmaceuticals Supply Service, Federal Hospitals, Federal Police and Ethiopian Disaster and Risk Management Commission.
