Training Course on Project, Financial Management for EU-Funded Projects Underway
September 19, 2024

Experts from Public Entities in Ethiopia, Uganda in attendance

ADDIS ABABA (September 18, 2024) – NIPN/EPHI – A three-day training course on Project and Financial Management for EU-Funded Projects is being conducted here for experts drawn from public entities in Ethiopia and Uganda.

Welcoming participants, Dr. Ragnhild Dybdahl, seconded to Africa CDC under the Building Stronger Public Health Institutions and Systems (BIS) program, said the training offers valuable opportunity for participants to gain substantial knowledge. She said that the training would serve as an important forum for project experts to exchange experiences. “In Norway, we learn a lot from partners. This is an important platform we should use to learn from each other,” she said.

Tara Kelly Dolgner, Senior Advisor at the Department of Research Administrative Support with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) said that her institute has taken the initiative to organize the training funded under the BIS program with the objective of enabling participants to have the basic understanding of the European Commission funding. “Participants are expected to gain knowledge of the entire EU project life cycle, from grant writing and the proposal development to project management and financial administration,” she said.

Tara said that the successful partnership between NIPH and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) has led to the initiative proposing this training. “We have been working together for the last three years to develop joint applications for different research projects, innovation actions, and capacity building initiatives. Under the BIS coordination, we are happy to report successful joint applications with NIPH and partners in Ethiopia and Uganda, such as the ENABLE project.” Participants include EPHI, Ethiopian National Information Platform for Nutrition (NIPN-Ethiopia), Addis Continental Institute of Public Health, Ugandan National Institute of Public Health, Uganda Virus Research Institute, Uganda National Council for Science and Technology, Ugandan National Drug Authority, Jimma University, and Haramaya University from Ethiopia.

The training course is led by instructors from LGI Sustainable Innovation. They have extensive experience with EU funding programs and currently coordinate the LEAP-RE (Europe-Africa Partnership for Renewable Energy – https://www.leap-re.eu/) program, which focuses on long-term research and innovation in renewable energy between the European Union and the African Union.

Twenty project coordinators, managers, financial experts, and researchers from  academia, as well as the private and public sectors are attending the three-day training at Hilton Addis Ababa. (NIPN/EPHI)
