For the First time in Africa; Ethiopia Hosts the 7th WHO EMT Global Meeting
—————————
The 7th World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Medical Teams (EMT) Global Meeting officially opened today at the Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, bringing together senior health officials and representatives of emergency medical teams from across the world.
The three-day meeting, scheduled for November 3–5, 2026 G.C.marks a historic milestone as Ethiopia becomes the first African country to host the global gathering.
The meeting provides Ethiopia with an important platform to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening national, regional and global emergency health response capacities, share its experiences, learn from other countries and contribute to international efforts to improve preparedness and response to public health emergencies.
In his virtual message, WHO Director-General Dr. Tewodros Adhanom highlighted that 77 emergency medical teams from 42 countries have achieved international classification. He also confirmed that Ethiopia had received WHO international classification certification for its Emergency Medical Team, expressing satisfaction with the country’s achievement.
Opening the meeting, Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, described the gathering as a source of national pride, emphasizing that it is the first time the global meeting has been held in Africa.
The Minister also noted that Ethiopia has made significant progress in strengthening its emergency medical response capacity since establishing its Emergency Medical Team in 2018. She further underscored that obtaining WHO international classification certification demonstrates the country’s commitment to continuously improving its capacity to respond effectively to emergencies.
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Deputy Director-General Dr. Melkamu Abte described Ethiopia’s international classification achievement as the result of years of sustained efforts, institutional commitment and the dedication of health professionals to meeting international emergency medical standards.
Dr. Melkamu emphasized that the recognition should not only be viewed merely as an institutional achievement but also as an ongoing responsibility to maintain readiness, strengthen operational capacity and ensure sustainable emergency response systems.WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, highlighted the growing public health emergency challenges facing the continent, noting that Africa experiences more than 100 major public health emergencies annually.
He stressed the need for substantial investment in rapid, effective and nationally led emergency medical responses. He also emphasized that stronger cooperation and mutual support among African countries are essential to preventing, managing and responding to public health emergencies.
During the opening ceremony, 31 Emergency Medical Teams received international classification recognition, marking another significant milestone in strengthening the global emergency medical response network.
Over the course of the meeting, participants are expected to deliberate on key priorities, including strengthening national and regional emergency medical team capacities, improving coordination between internationally and nationally deployed teams, and integrating emergency medical response systems into national health systems.
Discussions will also focus on identifying practical solutions to ensure timely and effective medical assistance to communities affected by disease outbreaks, natural disasters and humanitarian crises resulting from conflicts.
The meeting is expected to provide an important opportunity for countries and international partners to exchange experiences, strengthen collaboration and establish common strategic directions for improving emergency medical preparedness and response worldwide.
