EPHI Launches National VPD Research Strategy

ኢንስቲትዩቱ ብሔራዊ በክትባት የምንከላከላቸው በሽታዎች የምርምር ስትራቴጂን በይፋ አስጀመረ
—————–
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) with the Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and partners launched the National Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) Research Strategy (2026 – 2030) document on February 12, 2026.

Dr. Getachew Tellera, Deputy Director General of EPHI in his welcoming speech said that we strongly believe that generation of evidence is critical for the prevention, control, and eventual elimination of vaccine-preventable diseases. Evidence is the foundation of effective immunization programs. It informs policy, guides investment, strengthens public trust, and ensures that interventions are equitable, safe, and impactful. The National VPD Research Strategy responds to this need. It provides a coordinated, forward-looking framework to align research priorities with national immunization goals and health system needs.

EPHI’s Infectious Diseases Research Directorate Director Dr. Gemechu Tadesse explained that the strategy is structured in around six strategic objectives, generate research evidence to improve the effectiveness, equity, and quality of immunization programs, generate high-quality research to strengthen vaccine safety monitoring and risk assessment, strengthening epidemiology and disease burden estimation for vaccine-preventable diseases, evaluate sero-conversion rates and immunogenicity of vaccine antigens, harness pathogen genomics to investigate vaccine escape and the genomic evolution of vaccine-preventable diseases to promote innovation and support local vaccine manufacturing through public private partnerships. Policy and Strategy Lead Executive Officer of MoH,

Prof. Aster Tsegaye indicated that the launch of this strategy represents more than the release of a document; it symbolizes our shared commitment to evidence-based immunization policy, stronger health systems, and healthier generations.

From the partners’ side Dr. Francis Farai Chikuse of the Africa CDC mentioned that the VPDs Surveillance & Strategy in Ethiopia Strategy outlines a comprehensive and efficient approach to addressing Ethiopia’s escalating VPDs burden, emphasizing the importance of establishing a robust multisectoral research and surveillance systems. The strategy includes identifying priorities and developing a detailed implementation plan.

On the launching ceremony Dr. Rajiha Abubeker who is the Division Head of EPHI’s VPD Research Division presented the Genomic Characteriation of Vibro cholera (2022-2025): Insights into Vaccine Target Analysis and Mr. Yoseph Hayelemariam from EPHI’s VPD Research team also presented Rubella Burden and Epidemiology In Ethiopia to Inform Vaccination Policy: A Ten Year Analysis of Cases were few of the presentation delivered on the launching ceremony.
