Ethiopia has shown a strong commitment to implementing the National Action Plan for Health Security (NAPHS).
At the opening of the meeting, Dr. Messay Hailu, Director General of the Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI), stated that Ethiopia has shown a significant improvement in implementing the National Action Plan for Health Security (NAPHS), a strategic framework that directs the nation’s responses to health threats such as infectious diseases, biological threats, and vulnerabilities in the health system.
On his behalf, Dr. Feyissa Regassa, the office lead for International Health Regulation & One Health Coordination, stated that the workshop’s goal is to evaluate the improvements achieved in the first half of the 2017 EFY NAPHS implementation. Identifying gaps, suggesting optimization techniques, and validating the Monitoring and Evaluation Standard Operating Procedures were discussed to make sure that they are still applicable and efficient to assess nationwide goals effectively.
The six-month NAPHS implementation progress from July to December 2024 was also presented and discussed. The Ethiopia’s Joint External Evaluation (JEE) assessment demonstrated a remarkable increase of NAPHS performance from 47 percent in 2016 to 67 percent in 2023. The Ethiopia’s SPAR score has also shown a significant improvement over the past years. Representatives from various sectors and partners attended the Ethiopia NAPHS biannual performance assessment meeting, which took place in Adama town from February 25–26, 2025.
