EPHI Commemorates World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week at African CDC Headquarters
—————-
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) marked the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) with a high-level commemoration event held at the African CDC Headquarters Meeting Hall. This year’s global theme, “Act now: protect our present, secure our future,” highlighted the urgent need for collective action to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The event opened with a warm welcome and keynote speech delivered by Dr. Gemechu Tadesse, Director of the Infectious Diseases Research Directorate at EPHI. He emphasized the critical importance of strengthening awareness, research, and coordinated efforts to mitigate the burden of AMR in Ethiopia and globally.
The official opening speech was delivered by Dr. Getachew Tolera, Deputy Director General for Public Health Research at EPHI. Dr. Getachew described AMR as a “silent pandemic” responsible for the deaths of 1.27 million people globally and contributing to nearly 4.95 million deaths in 2019. He underscored the need for multisectoral collaboration among public health, environmental health, and animal health sectors, stressing that AMR is a shared responsibility. He also extended appreciation to stakeholders who contributed to the event’s preparation, with special acknowledgment to the UK Health Security Agency for its support.
The main objective of the commemoration was to raise awareness and promote best practices to combat AMR—particularly through strengthened and coordinated surveillance systems.
Globally, the impact of AMR on public health remains alarming. Beyond human casualties, AMR is projected to cause annual economic losses ranging from $1 trillion to $3.4 trillion in global GDP by 2030. Social impacts are also severe, with estimates showing that AMR could push an additional 24 million people into extreme poverty within the next decade, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations.
During the event, Mr. Gebrie Alebachew from EPHI provided an overview of the objective of WAAW, and this was followed by Mr. Wendossen Shewarega from the Ministry of Health, who presidented the term evaluation of the NAP 3.0 and introduced the new National Action 4.0 on AMR (2026-2030). In continuation, Mr. Negga Asemene from EPHI shared finding and challenges from the national AMR surveillance system, while Dr. Abebe Nageri highlighted approaches for genomic surveillance of AMR. Furthermore Dr. Selam Bogale, an infectious diseases fellow at Addis Ababa University shared relavant case studies on AMR in clinical settings. In addition, Dr.Biniam Tadesse from the Animal Health Institution presented surveillance data finding from the animal health sector, and Mrs. Firehiwot Abera addressed critical food safity measures related to AMR. The session concluded by Mr. Abebe Ejigu from the Ethiopian Food and Drug Administratoin , who emphazed the importance of retional drug use practices in combating AMR. The closing remark was made by Dr. Geremew Tasew.
The program concluded with a reflaction session, addressing questions and suggestions the need for sustained collaboration and commitment to ongoing control efforts.
