Ministry, Authorities, EPHI Consulted on Food Safety and Quality System

Aiming to identify existing challenges and explore potential opportunities within the Ethiopian food system, the Ministry of Agriculture(MOA), Ethiopian Public Health Institute(EPHI), Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority(EFDA) and stakeholders held a Consultative Workshop on Food Safety and Quality from February 17 to 19, 2025 in Bishoftu town.
“I urge all stakeholders to prioritize food safety and quality in Ethiopia. By working together, we can build a food system that not only meets the highest standards of safety but also contributes to the health, prosperity, and well-being of our nation,” said Dr. Getachew Tollera, Deputy Director General of EPHI while concluding the workshop.
Dr. Hamid Jemal, Deputy Director General of EAA explained how unsafe food is cause for the world’s most known health risks and the negative impacts on the agricultural process.
On his behalf Dr. Abrham Ali from EPHI representing the International Health Regulation (#IHR) and One Health (#OH), said that the IHR-One Health Office is striving to promote collaboration and partnership among all relevant stakeholders through establishment of multi-sectorial and deciplinary technical working group which is under OH umbrella.
UK Health Security Agency’s (UKHSA) country lead resentative Dr. Baye Ashenif, indicated that his Agency is always ready to support in this regard.
The workshop entertained various presentations, productive group discussions followed by an activity plan for the coming one year.
